The Oregon Fencing Alliance is privileged to have Phil Reilly as a leading member of our Board of Directors. His many years of fencing and business success give him a special insight and ability to help guide young athletes as well as OFA to strive to reach maximum potential. Phil has participated in the sport of fencing for over 35 years. During that time he has competed on all levels: high school, Junior Olympics, College, International, Pan American, Olympic and veterans. Phil trained under legendary and tough  U.S. National fencing coach Csaba Elthes. Phil currently trains with U.S. National coach and fellow board member, Ed Korfanty.

In addition to competing Phil has also been involved with the administrative side of Fencing in many different capacities on the club, divisional, United States Fencing Association (USFA) and Olympic levels.  Phil served as fencing vice chairman for the New York Athletic Club team, actively involved with the Oregon division, managed world champion teams, helped organized major national and international competitions, served the USFA in athletic and marketing capacities and currently is secretary of the Oregon Fencing Alliance.

Still an active fencer Phil trains 2-3 times per week and competes locally.  Also helps with the over 40 program which encourages fencing and mentoring with weekly classes and competitions at the OFA club. 

Outside of fencing, Phil is Vice-President and COO of CMD Agency, based in Portland, Oregon. CMD is one of the largest providers of integrated marketing and training solutions in the country. CMD develops and produces fully integrated marketing communications in a wide variety of media, services including: strategy, research, web, CD-ROM and multimedia, film and video, graphic design, advertising, media buying, sales promotions and meeting and events. Clients include Intel, HP, Cisco, Dell, McCormick & Schmicks, Bridgetport Brewing, Jeld-Wen and NW Natural. Previous employment had Phil working with major clients such as Nabisco, Pepsi, Kimberly-Clark, Starbucks, Miller Brewing, etc.

Essex Catholic HS fencing team 65’- 69’.  Interscholastic Sabre champion, Under 19 Sabre champion, New Jersey high school individual sabre, sabre team and overall team champion and was the Essex Catholic High School Outstanding Athlete of the year.

 St. John’s University fencing team 69’-73’.  First team NCAA All-American in sabre.  Awarded the St John’s University-Giorgio Santelli Outstanding fencer of the year award.

Elected to the St. John’s University’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Pan American Team member 79’, 83’.  Sabre team silver medallist 79’, 83’.  Individual Sabre 5th place 83’.        

US Olympic Team member: Montreal 76’ (alternate), Moscow 80’, Los Angeles 84’. In LA the men’s sabre team finished in 6th place.  Elected Fencing team captain for 84’ team. 

US Summer Nationals 98’ 1st place - men’s sabre over 40 and 3rd place in the combined veterans event.

Chief of Mission for the Junior World Championship team Athens, Greece 1987.

US Olympic Committee job opportunity program, New York Metro area.  Assisted the regional director in finding companies interested in hiring Olympic and potential Olympic athletes in career directed job that allowed time off for training and competitions 78’-84’.

New York International “A” World Cup Sabre Tournament 87’-90’.  Managed the competition: duties included arranging the travel arrangements for foreign teams, hotel accommodations for all athletes transportation during the events, administration, contracts, facility management, coordination of staff, protocol, hospitality, scheduling, coordination PR and budget.

Olympic Festival San Antonio, Texas 1993. Managed staff on marketing and Public relations programs supporting the event.  The objective was to ensure good crowds and spectator interaction, ensure good media coverage, ensure a quality competition and enhance fencing’s image to the non fencing public.

USFA marketing committee 92’- 96’.Assisted the executive board in areas of overall marketing strategy, reviewed USFA tie-in’s with Olympic Sponsors, participated in the search for the Executive Director.

Producer for 1996 Olympic Games Fencing Venue. Produced the Women’s world cup foil pre-Olympic event.

1998 NIKE World Masters Games commissioner for fencing.  Presented rationale to include fencing in the World Masters. Duties included working with games staff arranging hotel accommodations for all athletes, administration, contracts, facility management, hospitality, and coordination of staff and protocol.

Served on the USFA board from 2000-2004.

US Summer Nationals 98’ - 1st place in men’s sabre over 40 and 3rd place combined veterans even.

Actively involved in veterans fencing.  National champion in the 50 + men’s sabre 2000.  Competed in the 2000 and 2001 Veterans world championships.  Won the Silver medal in the sabre individual at the 2000 world championship.
